Confronting Age Through Self Portraits

The truth about fear is that it goes away when you confront it.  I'm afraid to age.  This is one of my secret anxieties.  There are three things that help me to walk on this path of growing older.  The first is to take a walk or a run every day.  The second is to occasionally take pictures of myself without make up.  The third is to keep moving forward with my decision not to color my hair.  Recently I was introduced to a young woman who had made this choice.  Her decision to go gray and to be her natural, authentic self had the effect of highlighting her youthful, happy face.  Instead of having young looking hair with an older face, the old looking hair made a stunning contrast to a young face.

So in order not to be afraid of growing older, I'm going to share a few of the self portraits I took this month.  They are unedited and taken in the morning light on my back porch.

  1. Oh, I've noticed your new post in my dush board right after I commented previous one, haha.
You really look young (truly), no need to have fear for aging yet. With my age, I can only say no way but just face it (*^_^*)
    But keep up good exercise♪♪♪

  2. A good common sense approach but then you don't really have to worry about the aging thing for a while girl.

  3. The older you get the more it rings true...age really is only a number. The truth is that being young at heart is what makes us young. I know lots of thirty somethings that are cranky and old at heart and the converse for some sixty somethings.

    Be Not Afraid...

  4. Hi Jenny. What lovely photos - and you're worried about ageing?! No need to do that for quite some time to come, I would say, judging by those pics. Your skin is lovely. I agree with Sush. I'm 64 now (and I still can't believe that!!!) and it-s keeping young at heart that really matters. I feel that some people are born middle-aged. Some are old at 25, whilst some older people are still fun to be with. That's what it's all about really. BUT, you're far too young to be worrying about this sort of thing my friend!!

  5. Your photos are lovely! So natural and, to be honest, I cannot see what you are worrying about at this stage of your life. You have a beautiful, clear, unlined and unblemished skin, bright eyes and a lovely smile. You really look marvellous :)

I couldn't agree more with Sush and Diane's observations about age. Now, stop worrying unnecessarily about something that is going to happen anyway, but not for a good many years in your case...and wear that smile, stay positive and continue to do all the things you're already doing to look as good as you do!
